12:00 PM In the Spring of 2018, Heather Moqtaderi reached out to Lara Yeager-Crasselt, Curator of The Leiden Collection, to discuss bringing the exhibition An Inner World: Seventeenth-Century Dutch Genre Painting to the Arthur Ross Gallery. The exhibition was originally curated by Yeager-Crasselt at The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Moqtaderi was drawn to the exhibition’s focus on quiet introspection through the lens of the Leiden fijnschilders. Many works in the exhibition depict solitary figures standing at windows – a pictorial framework that became uncannily resonant when the COVID-19 quarantine came into effect in the Spring of 2020. The exhibition took on new meaning for Moqtaderi as the quarantine required a new contemporary focus on solitude. In this 12-minute gallery talk, Moqtaderi will reflect on organizing this exhibition in the time of quarantine. Heather Moqtaderi is Assistant Director and Curator of the Arthur Ross Gallery, University of Pennsylvania. She earned her MA from the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture, University of Delaware (2004). At the Arthur Ross Gallery, her most recent exhibition was Re-materialize, featuring contemporary works by El Anatsui, Shari Mendelson, Jackie Milad, and Alison Saar. Previous projects include the crowd-sourced exhibition Citizen Salon and Landscape/Soundscape, which paired landscape photography from Penn’s University Art Collection with commissioned soundscapes. Her exhibitions at other venues include Victoriana Reimagined at the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion and Duality at the Delaware Art Museum. Moqtaderi also teaches the history of modern design as an adjunct professor at Drexel University.
