Internationally renowned Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa’s public art is driven by a desire to emphasize the possibilities of communication brought about through sculpture and place.  Installed around the world, Plensa’s art is one of inclusion –bringing people together—and of profound impact. Talking Continents is an installation of 19 sculptures that are at once separate and interrelated. Comprised of letters from various alphabets that don’t come together as words, the works exist instead as abstract forms, as arbitrary signs and shapes. As such, each sculpture embodies a dissolution of meaning or breakdown in communication. At the same time, the letters comprising the works are also the components needed to reconstruct words and create meaning—the building blocks for cultural understanding. A firm believer that art has the capacity to transform our lives, Plensa has stated that Talking Continents represents the concept of globalism without judgement.
