Re-materialize curator Heather Moqtaderi speaks with Jackie Milad about her mixed media works in the exhibition, as well as making art in times of social distancing. The conversation will be accompanied by photographs of Milad’s artworks. This program will be held in the Zoom webinar format, and viewers will have the opportunity to submit questions and comments.

About Jackie Milad: Jackie Milad questions preciousness and practices experimentation through artworks that highlight themes of history and culture. Within her collages, Milad gives us hints of her identity as an Egyptian-Honduran-American through pictorial elements and deconstructed language. She utilizes color and texture, freeing herself up to be responsive and reactive during her process. This breakdown of symbols and collapse of ideas references her experience in the world and allows the viewer to draw multiple meanings from small details in each piece. Milad received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, and her MFA from Towson University. She has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Recent select exhibitions include C. Grimaldis Gallery (Baltimore, Maryland), Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture (Charlotte, North Carolina), Grizzly Grizzly (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), School 33 Art Center (Baltimore, Maryland), Phoebe Projects (Baltimore, Maryland), Museo de Arte de Mazatlan (Mazatlan, Mexico), Transmitter (Brooklyn, New York), Goucher College and Loyola University (Baltimore, Maryland). Milad has been awarded three Individual Artist Grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and is a 2019 Sondheim Finalist, recently exhibiting her work at the Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, Maryland). Her work is in the permanent collections of Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Library, Maryland, the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, Maryland, and Facebook Inc (FB AIR program).
